When we feel under pressure, scrutinised or afraid of getting it wrong, our confidence can falter. Self-doubt creeps in, and with it comes decision inertia: the quiet stall where nothing moves because nothing feels certain enough.
The cost is rarely dramatic. It can be drift, missed opportunities and a gradual loss of trust in our own judgement.
If you are a business owner, founder or leader, you may recognise this feeling. You have options in front of you, but you keep revisiting them, waiting for the moment when the right choice feels completely clear.
Sometimes, what keeps us stuck is not a lack of options. It is the feeling that we need more reassurance before we are allowed to choose.
You might find yourself asking the same questions, looking for another opinion or waiting for “the right time”. Thinking becomes a loop rather than a way forward.
That does not mean every decision should be made quickly. Some choices need careful research, specialist advice or time. But it can be useful to ask whether you are gathering information that will genuinely help or waiting for a level of certainty that may not arrive.
Here is the reframe: where a decision can be reviewed and adjusted, taking a considered first step can be more useful than waiting for complete certainty.
Not every choice is a final verdict. Some are a first move you can refine as you learn.
Rather than asking, “How can I make sure this is perfect?”, try asking:
The aim is not to rush yourself. It is to recognise when further thinking is helping and when it is simply keeping you in the same place.
It can be difficult to consider your options when you feel judged, exposed or under pressure to get everything right.
Before the next big decision, pause and ask yourself:
“Do I feel settled enough to think this through?”
You do not need complete comfort or certainty. You may simply need a quieter moment, a slower pace or space to explore your thoughts without managing anyone else’s reaction.
Take a breath. Notice the pressure you are putting on yourself. Then return to the decision in front of you.
For a leader, that pause can also be an opportunity to consider how you want to communicate your decision, not just what you want to decide.
Sometimes, what helps is having somewhere to think out loud.
